Cate Blanchett made her fifth film festival appearance of the year at the New York Film Festival premiere of ‘Rumours’ on Saturday, following stops at Cannes, Venice, TIFF, and San Sebastián. But this time, she served up what is arguably her most controversial look yet—one that’s even more unexpected than her recycled spoons looks.
Cate stepped onto the red carpet in a top adorned with hair wefts from the Fiorucci Spring 2025 collection. Created by hairstylist Taiba Akhuetie, who is known for using hair wefts as a form of artistic expression, the top was part of a collaboration with Fiorucci’s new creative director, Francesca Murri. This collection marks a significant comeback for Fiorucci, reintroducing itself to the fashion scene with a playful, unconventional aesthetic that remains true to its iconic DNA.
Keeping the rest of the look simple, Cate paired the statement top with her new go-to—leather trousers—and accessorized with a gold link necklace. The minimal styling allowed the focus to remain on the intricacy and uniqueness of the top, which showcased the bold creativity of both Akhuetie and Murri.
I know many have been hoping to see something fresh and dynamic from Cate after her series of recycled red carpet outings, and, well, ‘hair’ it is. The Fiorucci look is bold, artistic, and embraces risk in a way that we haven’t seen from Cate in a while.
But it’s undeniably divisive. Some may find the idea of wearing hair on a red carpet to be avant-garde, even a stroke of genius, while others might find it borderline bizarre.
Personally, I admire Cate’s willingness to experiment. This look isn’t about pleasing everyone; it’s about pushing the boundaries of fashion as an art form, and it feels like a statement of creative freedom. In an era when red carpet fashion can often feel safe or formulaic, this Fiorucci moment is a reminder of how style can be daring, unexpected, and, yes, controversial.
