Ariana Grande made an appearance at the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, offering a refined vintage-inspired moment.
While her ‘Wicked’ co-star Cynthia Erivo continues to lean into green for her pre-press tour duties, Ariana opted for something more timeless, reminding us of fashion’s past while staying true to her signature delicate style.
Ariana graced the event in a recreation of a 1963 Pierre Balmain design. The white silk organza dress, adorned with a classic black polka-dot motif and black mousseline ribbons at the décolleté and skirt which echoes a nostalgic era of haute couture.
While some may argue that the look feels dated, especially given today’s penchant for more modern interpretations of vintage pieces, I’d disagree. The dress, instead, acts as a tribute to Balmain’s rich history and craftsmanship, rather than aiming for a hyper-contemporary moment. The timelessness of this look speaks volumes about Ariana’s appreciation for fashion as an art form.
What I appreciated most is how the dress and its delicate details were styled without compromising the integrity. It’s a breath of fresh air to see a star respect the history behind a design, preserving the authenticity rather than altering it to fit modern sensibilities—unlike other moments we’ve seen on recent red carpets.
Ariana completed the look with understated Swarovski jewels, adding just the right touch of sparkle to a piece that didn’t need much else to speak for itself. This was a quiet but impactful tribute to classic fashion, a reminder that sometimes the past holds more beauty than the present.
