Cynthia Erivo hosted the 2024 CFDA Awards with dramatic flair

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) celebrated the winners and honourees of the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards, presented by Amazon Fashion, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City on Monday. The evening’s festivities were hosted by British actress Cynthia Erivo, who brought her signature flair to the role.

In a surprising twist, Cynthia veered from her usual green-hued looks, opting instead for a custom black gown by Gap, designed by Gap Inc.’s Executive Vice President and Creative Director, Zac Posen, alongside Gap’s design team. Her ensemble, crafted from luxurious velvet, featured a hooded cape—a dramatic detail inspired by her role as Elphaba in ‘Wicked’. Accenting this deep, dark palette was the Elsa Peretti® Claw necklace in 18k gold, featuring a striking green jade accent.

As a petite actress, Cynthia often plays with silhouettes to add height, and Posen’s choice of a mermaid skirt achieved just that, elongating her frame with dramatic flair. The voluminous skirt is a classic Posen signature, designed to command attention, and Cynthia wore it effortlessly. The dress combined high fashion and theatricality in a way only Cynthia can.

For those wondering if Cynthia’s ‘Wicked’ press tour would be limited to shades of green—given the heavy use of the colour pre-tour—this appearance proves she can pivot her colour palette while staying on theme with the film’s promotion.

This look brings to mind Halle Bailey’s memorable moment in Gucci at the Met Gala, where she wore her standout gown before ‘The Little Mermaid’ press tour began. So let’s hope that Cynthia didn’t peek too soon, or if this is a peek at what’s to come.

She completed her look with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including Jean Schlumberger ear clips, as well as rings from the HardWear and Knot collections.
