Cynthia Erivo stepped out for the ‘Journey Through Oz’ Tour to mark the Australian premiere of ‘Wicked’ at Sydney’s State Theatre on Sunday, wearing a custom black bustier gown by Louis Vuitton.
The look featured a sculptural skirt paired with black satin boots, creating a dramatic, fashion-forward silhouette. However, for the start of this press tour, the look fell a bit short of expectations.
While some may be relieved this isn’t another green gown, others might be surprised by the departure. Yet for me, the issue lies not in the colour choice but in the silhouette itself, which immediately reminded me of the Giambattista Valli’s Fall 2024 Haute Couture gown worn by Isabela Merced this summer and then by Marina Ruy Barbosa last month.
In that Giambattista Valli gown, the streamlined skirt allowed structure to shine. In contrast, this Louis Vuitton skirt feels bulkier and slightly overwhelming.
Even setting aside comparisons, the heaviness of this skirt doesn’t work, especially as the structure and exaggerated points already provide a strong focal point. With the added volume, the balance leans towards excess, which doesn’t deliver the start I was hoping for in Cynthia’s press tour wardrobe.
Hopefully, the next appearance brings a fresh silhouette that lets her unique style truly shine.
