Lily-Rose Depp joined her co-star Emma Corrin on the red carpet at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Thursday for the premiere of Nosferatu. Serving up no surprises, the French actress opted for Chanel Haute Couture, this time from the Fall 1995 collection.
Whenever I see Lily-Rose in an archival piece like this pale purple silk chiffon dress—styled with matching silk tulle and trimmed with a fine braid of silver glass beads in an abstract grid pattern—my imagination runs wild. I picture her stepping into her mother’s archives and pulling out a treasure gifted by Karl Lagerfeld himself. But alas, this particular look is a reproduction, part of Chanel’s approach in the absence of a creative director.
With Matthieu Blazy newly announced as Chanel’s artistic director yesterday, I can’t help but wonder if this trend of reproducing archival pieces will continue. Will the house delve further into its storied past, or will Blazy bring a fresh perspective? I suppose only time will tell.
Some might argue that this dress feels too old-fashioned for Lily-Rose, but I disagree. Much like her mother, Keira Knightley, and Diane Kruger, she possesses a certain elegance that allows her to make archival pieces work effortlessly. There’s something timeless about her presence that complements a design like this.
Chanel High Jewelry, including the Diamant Essentiel earrings and Fleur Secrète ring, completed the look.
Whenever Lily-Rose steps out in Chanel, it feels like a continuation of a legacy. This look may be steeped in nostalgia, but it feels entirely hers. She made this reproduction feel like a true original.
