Nicole Kidman graced the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala on Tuesday, where she collected the Best Actress Award for Babygirl, delivering her second open-back look of the week.
From the front, her Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2014 Haute Couture black velvet gown felt underwhelming, even by her standards. But then she turned, and suddenly, it became a moment. The open back, draped with decadent strands of pearls, elevated the look to something worthy of her status as a red carpet icon.
As much as I wanted to love this look wholeheartedly, I was distracted by the hair. I get it—the back needed to be the star, but a side-swept ponytail felt more rushed than refined. A sleeker, more elegant solution—perhaps a low chignon bun or an updo—would not have interfered with the drama of those pearls.
Ultimately, this look was saved by the brilliance of its details. The pearls made it a head-turner.
