We’ve seen our fair share of bobs over the years. With a new length, finish, texture or trend taking over each season. This year, we’ll see a new style taking precedent, born out of a familiar face.

You might have found Anine Bing through her fashion or excellently stacked earrings, but what we’ve taken away from her style over the past few seasons is her stellar hairstyle — the boy bob. An effortless length, easily slicked back daily into a sleek style, so gorgeous you’ll dream of chopping off your hair at any length to recreate the look.

The Boy Bob

Traditional bobs stick to a defined set of angles, lines and cutting techniques. With the boy bob, the rules have effectively been thrown out the window. This shape is meant to take on a free form, similar to the surfer-chic style we’ve seen up and down the California coast for decades. Short and sweet, the finishing touches need to leave the look feeling undone and effortless to allow for natural texture and individual style to shine.

Get The Look

The cut can vary in length, the addition of texturization, and waver between round and square layers and include fringe or rock on without it. The look should be tailored to individual hair texture and take into account how you’ll be styling your look.

Styling the Boy Bob

While we love the traditional “wet look” championed by Anine herself, there are various ways to wear this iconic finish.

For a wet look:

Add styling gel to wet or roughly dried hair to pull the look into shape while allowing some of the natural, undone, texture of your hair type to shine through.

A wavy finish:

After cleansing and conditioning, add a sea salt spray from roots to tips and allow to air dry. Once completely dry, touch up tendrils with a texturizing spray to add volume and movement.

For curls:

For naturally curly hair, you’ll want to add a leave-in conditioner and curl cream to damp hair. Once dry, consider touching up with a small wand if needed and add a touch of shine spray to define texture.
