An iconic handbag certainly doesn’t come along too often. One immediately thinks of the Fendi Baguette, the Lady Dior, the Hermès Birkin… But we have the sneaking suspicion that Ferragamo is about to add to that glorious list.

Indeed, inspired by the archetypal Kimo sandal first created by Salvatore Ferragamo in 1951, the brand new Ferragamo Cage Bag already feels like a legend in the making. Wrapped around a classic bucket style bag, the lightweight cage construction appears almost architectural in its aesthetic, and the ultimate impression is one that is elegant, pragmatic and playfully provocative – not to mention modern and classical in equal measure.

And because the Ferragamo woman is one of many moods and stylistic predilections, there are enough variations of materials and colors for every one of them: Saddle Brown with gold studs and natural fabric inner bag; Black with multi-colour studs and natural fabric inner bag; Tyrone Turquoise, Optical White or Candy Apple, with monochrome hardware and inner bag; and our favorite, Black with golden studs and same-color inner bag.

Such a monumental launch of course required an ambassador of equal gravitas. And so the Cage campaign stars Italian supermodel Mariacarla Boscono, who has previously been the face of Chanel, Stella McCartney, Valentino, Bottega Veneta and countless others (she’s also walked the runway for Ferragamo in the past). The accompanying short film was shot at the Oscar Niemeyer designed former Cartiere Burgo paper factory in Turin, with Signorina Boscono enthusiastically lifting her Cage Bag skyward to catch the glow from a very modern looking skylight just above her.

Certainly there’s a frisson of excitement around the debut of what could very well become a new fashion icon. But until we see how that all plays out, we’re just looking forward to having a Ferragamo Cage Bag as a trusted style companion in the months ahead.
