Emma Stone wore a simple dress to the 2022 Met Gala, but that short white gown was a bold move. She has worn the dress to a major event before, which is nearly unheard of for fashion’s biggest night. But if you’re going to recycle on the first Monday in May, wearing your wedding dress is an excellent choice.

Stone’s Met Gala dress is the same one she wore during her wedding weekend to Dave McCary in 2020. “Emma Stone’s dress is in fact a special piece she wore to her wedding afterparty that has never been seen publicly before,” Vogue reported.

ANGELA WEISS

Wedding dresses are ridiculously, painfully under-worn, considering their beauty and expense. We should all be rolling up in used wedding dresses at everything from concerts to school pick-ups. But let’s not get carried away here. This wasn’t her wedding dress as some publications are reporting, but one of her many looks from the occasion. Also, while most celebrity events are highly photographed, pictures from the Stone-McCary nuptials were not shared in the media, so the dress hasn’t been seen by the public before. (If a dress is worn to a celebrity wedding but no one sees it, does it make a sound? Ya know?)

The dress was designed by Louis Vuitton, so it’s not as if it’s some big sacrifice to wear it again. And of course, the notion that “wearing a dress twice in public” is shocking and some kind of sacrifice is certainly not an attitude that helps the ongoing, increasingly deadly climate crisis. Nevertheless, it is a notion that has been widely embraced by celebrities and their public. So every time someone breaks the trend, however mildly, it’s a nice thing.

Separate from its backstory, Emma Stone’s look is polarizing, with some calling it a perfect interpretation of the theme, and others comparing it unfavorably to the costumes in the movie Black Swan. For our money, it looks a bit like the iconic Edgar Degas Little Dancer of Fourteen Years statue, which was sculpted in 1880, placing it squarely in the “Gilded Glamour” time period, though ballerinas were not considered particularly glamorous at the time.
