There are many different types of materials that can be used to make t-shirts. One significant difference between materials is their weight. Lighter-weight fabrics, such as polyester and cotton, are generally easier to work with than heavier-weight fabrics such as wool and denim. They will also require less time to sew. 1. Cotton

Cotton is the most commonly used fabric for t-shirts. It consists of an outer layer of cotton and an inner layer of cellulose. The two layers are bonded together with a chemical called starch which is added to hold them together and make them soft and smooth.

Cotton can absorb up to 8 to 9 times its weight in moisture. This makes it hard to dry and very absorbent, which acts as a wrinkle-fighter when worn. A shirt made from cotton will generally last between 4-6 months, depending on how often you wear it and how much washing you do.

2. Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fiber made from petrochemicals. It was the first synthetic fiber, and it was invented in Germany in 1910. Polyester is a very affordable and widely used fabric that is easy to sew.

It lacks that “snug” feeling of natural fiber clothing but has many advantages: good shrinkage, easy-care, good resistance to abrasion, less tendency to pilling, wrinkle resistance, and rapid drying.

3. Nylon

Nylon is one of the oldest artificial fibers used for fabric. DuPont created it in 1936. Nylon can be divided into short (weaves) and long (fibers). Short-weaves are the most commonly used and have the highest tensile strength.

One of the main problems with nylon is that it tends to wrinkle easily, so its main use is as a trimming or lining material. Nylon is also used in shoe uppers, suits, upholstery, and textiles.

4. Rayon

Rayon is one of the first synthetic fibers developed by Justus von Liebig in 1871 to make ingestible dyes. It was invented for use in clothing because it’s very absorbent and has high tensile strength compared with other synthetic fibers.

Today, rayon fabric can be found in nearly all areas of clothing, from fabrics for formal wear to swimwear and athletic wear.

5. Silk

Silk is a fine filament made of fibroin protein found in the cocoons of silkworms. Its strong and silky texture makes it popular around the world. Silk is a natural fiber made from silkworm waste and by-products.

The biggest problem with silk is its price, but it has become more affordable in recent years – check out the bags of Japanese canned tuna to see some good uses.

6. Wool

Wool can be divided into two classes: woolen and worsted. Woolen is generally heavier weight (often referred to as yarn) than worsted (which contains wool and other fibers). Woolen fabrics are hardwearing, warm, and absorbent, with excellent drapes.

Summary

There are so many different fabrics that can be used when creating a t-shirt. The most commonly used one is cotton. Because it is affordable, but many other great fabrics, such as rayon, polyester, and wool, can be used.
