In the past few seasons, low-maintenance, effortless-looking hair trends have been on the rise. From barely-there bends to undone waves and perfect natural curls. While many have perfected the air-dry process to enhance texture, those without natural waves and curls have been trying to emulate the style with the use of hot tools. With the latest salon service — Cali-Curl — clients who have been wishing for those beachy-looking waves or classic curls no longer have to labor over their style to achieve them.

What is Cali-Curl?

Cali-Curl is an innovative new salon service and styling & care range founded by Kevin Hoye. It is a professional salon texture service built and developed with innovative and patented waving tools and liquid technology that achieves beautiful soft beach waves, and volume while maintaining undeniable shine and hair health. “In creating and evolving Cali-Curl, I am constantly thinking of where it can go and what it can be, for the industry and for clients,” said Hoye. “The vision was to create one system overall that could have an impact on the professional beauty industry and truly be a win for everyone at all levels of the business and in the chair.”

The Highlights:

  • The service takes only 45-65 minutes in the salon and lasts 3-6 months
  • Cuts down on heat styling and damage
  • Grows out with no line of demarcation
  • Can be used on color-treated hair
  • The service has no unpleasant odor and hair is shampooed and conditioned during the service

If your client is looking for a quick and easy way to add waves, curls or volume to their look, Cali-Curl is the answer. With a range of curl sizes to create a multitude of looks, the Cali-Curl service can easily be tailored to their hair type and desired style. To learn more about this groundbreaking service we’re answering some of top questions below!

What hair types is Cali-Curl best suited for?

  • The best candidates for a Cali-Curl are:
  • Clients with straight hair that resists bend
  • Hair that doesn’t hold a curl with heat
  • Those with uneven curl or wave patterns throughout the head
  • Clients with fine hair looking for more body.

* If you already have texture type 3 or 4, then the Cali-Curl Beach Wave System is not recommended for you.

What about color-treated hair?

What sets Cali-Curl apart from previous services in this category is that stylists can perform a Cali-Curl on chemically or color-treated hair. Up until now, this wouldn’t be considered possible. *However, like any chemical service we advise to proceed with caution on highly processed and extremely porous hair. This is a professional service and stylists need to rely on their experience and the client’s hair health and history when assessing a client for a Cali-Curl service.

What is the upkeep like?

Depending on the hair type and a client’s maintenance routine at home following the service, Cali-Curl will last 3-6 months. For best results, it is recommended to use Cali-Curl Hair Care products with patented bond repair technology to extend the life of the Cali-Curl. When it comes time for touch-ups, it’s best to use your professional judgement and assess the health of the client’s hair.

Is there a grow-out phase?

The beautiful thing about Cali-Curl is that the service will eventually fade off. The hair will return to looking and feeling like its normal state without any noticeable line of demarcation. After 3-6 months, stylists can consult their clients on the best time to touch up their Cali-Curls to keep the beautiful volume, hold and wave pattern all year round!

Does Cali-Curl work on wavy hair?

While it is not recommended for hair texture types 3 and 4, if done properly Cali-Curl works beautifully, on wavy and looser curly hair types (texture types 1 and 2). If the hair type you are considering has a looser pattern than Cali-Curl or is inconsistent, Cali-Curl can enhance, tighten and create a more uniform wave pattern.

Can the service be performed on curly hair?

The Cali-Curl is not intended to loosen or soften existing curl patterns. However, if done properly, certain wave and curl patterns that are tighter than a Cali-Curl wave pattern can be loosened with the service. Keep in mind the type of curl pattern and how the Cali-Curl will blend with the hair at the root and new growth. We would not recommend doing the Cali-Curl service on texture types 3 or 4.

Pro tips from Cali-Curl Global Artistic Director Ammon Carver

As a new service, Carver’s best piece of advice is to master the foundations of the service first, then the sky is the limit on customization. “What we are launching with Cali-Curl changes the lives of the consumers that experience a Cali- Curl, and for beauty professionals that perform those services. [Cali-Curl] is time effective, profitable, and the added value of a shampoo and condition after a texture service is a game-changer in our industry,” says Carver.

The foundations of the service include:

  • Start by reading the instructions and watching the education videos on www.Cali-Curl.com/Learn. Then, be sure to tune into upcoming webinars or classes.
  • Make sure to not skip steps or deviate from Cali-Curl instructions by adding in another brand’s products during the service.
  • Do your first service on a mannequin before moving to clients with low porosity hair.
  • Start with a Classic Cali-Curl wrap as outlined in our instructions, to figure out the techniques and how different rings, the density of section, tautness of the twist and the placement of rings can yield different results. On top of this learn how the porosity, hair length, cut, health, etc. can affect final results with the same classic wrap.
  • Finally, set your guest up for success by educating them on how to take care of and style their new wavy hair.
