When I think of ’90s “going out” style, I picture silk slip dresses with cowl necklines, slinky kitten heeled sandals, and one hairstyle to rule them all: A claw clip-secured twist with two immaculate face-framing layers hairsprayed to perfection.

On Sunday, July 10, Jennifer Lopez gave this classic ’90s prom hair the perfect modern update, swapping those iconic face-framing pieces for two twisted braids. Working with longtime hairstylist Chris Appleton, Lopez paired her braids with a high bun for a sleek, slicked-back look.

“Weekend snatch,” Appleton wrote on Instagram.

Lopez shared the style to Instagram with the hashtag “weekend shoots.” In addition to Appleton, she tagged her stylists, Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn (though, notably, she’s wearing a silk floral robe in the pic), her nail artist Tom Bachik, and makeup artist Mary Phillips. She also tagged JLo Beauty, meaning the look is probably for some promo shots.

While the style is a departure from her typical blown out waves, it’s not the first retro style that Lopez has tried. At the premiere of her documentary Halftime, for example, J.Lo opted for a tall half-pony with I Dream of Genie Vibes.
