Paris Fashion Week is still in full swing, and Selena Gomez has arrived in a matching, black-and-white checked top and skirt combo with bright white pumps, a heart-shaped Alaia bag, and hair Bumpits-ed up to here. My first thought when I saw this look was Cher Horowitz from Clueless, which I stand by, but there is also a very heavy-handed ’60s vibe which feels like part of a trend.
These are the first photos we’re getting of the Only Murders In the Building actor at Paris Fashion Week. Most recently, she’s been photographed at the Only Murders Season 2 premiere, her Rare Beauty Sephora launch, and, of course, at the nuptials of the one and only Britney Jean Spears.
Gomez is only the latest celebrity to take this very literal approach to ’60s mod style. Earlier this year, Anne Hathaway attended the Cannes Film Festival wearing sky-high hair and the minidress that launched a thousand gags. Jennifer Lopez unveiled her own approach to the mid-century supermodel style, wearing a babydoll dress and jacket in matching vintage floral pattern with platform heels and a high half-pony.
This look combines several deep 1960s hallmarks, including the matching set, miniskirt, a playful touch from the handbag, and, of course, the iconic lift to the hair. While I’ve definitely seen more poofed up hairstyles on celebs these days, I don’t know if I’ll be shopping for Bumpits again any time soon. This feels less like a return to the styles of the aughts than it does an embrace of camp, of which I approve. Then again, I have been wrong about these things before.
