In this edition of Love Happens’ Design Questionnaire, we welcome you to join us for a peek into the creative world of Rajvi Vora, founder and master jeweler behind Kastur Jewels. A third generation of Indian origin, and former humanitarian aid in some of the most vulnerable and volatile parts of the world, today Rajvi lives in London. In 2013, Kastur began as a journey to design and source sustainable, heritage-inspired jewellery that starts with her past, family, and history.

“My ancestry (Oshwal Jains) comes from the ancient town of Osian located in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan (457 BC)—close to where the most incredible Jain temples of Ranakpur stand proud and historical influences and stories have inspired and fascinated,” says Rajvi. “There is a sense of immense pride in knowing that certain age-old methods of craftsmanship and design that we draw heavy inspiration from hail from this part of the world. As a child, I would be fascinated with the jewellery collections my mother, grandmothers, and aunts had. Interestingly most of their pieces are still around and within the family;—passed down from one generation to the other. Kastur was the name of my late grandmother (a staunch Jain) and aptly meaning ‘Gift of God’.”

Today, Kastur uses ethically sourced gems and small batch production by select craftsmen using age-old techniques. The designs are inspired by old ideas and designs focusing on old architectural palaces, temples, and geometry. A truly beautiful and intriguing style!

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being fully content. A simple way of life, a dignified attitude, constant gratitude, and zero expectation.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Hopefully, I can say I am still too young to answer that, but so far, I would say my ongoing commitment to try to help the poorest of the poor (20 years and going…), step by step, and now through my humanitarian arm of the business @kastursocialresponsibilty.

What profession does your alter ego have?

Most definitely a humanitarian aid worker or war journalist.

The design you will never forget.

This 22kt gold ring with enamel detail. The ring was pure joy to design. It was one of the most daring, bold, and special pieces we have done. Set on 22kt gold with a natural selenite stone, it features an ancient enamel technique first invented by Iranian craftsmen from the Sassanid era, dating as far back as 224 AD. The Mughals then brought the technique to India. The ancient doors of Chandra Mahal side of the city palace, Jaipur (1729-132 AD) inspired the piece’s colour palette. I have done this ring in various other colour combinations, but this has been a favourite so far!

Your favorite business tool or resource.

Would have to say I am very old-fashioned. Probably my hands! I am forever sketching and piecing things together!

The most timeless design.

These classic ring bands which have been done since the 15th century in many forms and shapes. This is our re-take. We have done them in various stones, from uncut diamonds to green garnets and orange sapphires.

The biggest design faux pas.

That silver & gold shouldn’t be mixed. I think silver & gold work really well together if designed and styled correctly.

Your design motto.

Authentic & Timeless but fun.

Our publisher KOKET makes statement décor; if you were to design a piece of jewellery inspired by one of their piece, which would it be, and why?

I think it would be the Neurotica II Sculpture. I am a big fan of sculptural art forms and jewellery. This design would make such an interesting earring, necklace, and ring. I can just visualize it looking so fabulous on the body.
