Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, Buckingham Palace announced today. At 96 years old, she was the United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” palace officials wrote. Hours before the news of the queen’s passing broke, doctors stated they were “concerned” for her health. She was in Scotland as she always is during the summers, nearby the now-King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort.

She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren, including the next two family members in line for the throne: Charles and Prince William. Other senior members of the royal family, including Prince Andrew and the Earl of Wessex were by her side. Although Prince Harry and Megan Markle stepped back from their duties as senior royals in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex happened to be in the U.K. on September 8, and Prince Harry went to Balmoral Castle to say goodbye to his grandmother.

Following the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, tributes from world leaders, public figures, and celebrities poured in across social media.
