Hailey Bieber has a message for her fellow Christians: theirs is a God of love.
The Rhode skincare founder took to Instagram Stories on Monday, October 24 to denounce anti-Semitism, which many are taking as a response to Ye’s (FKA Kanye West) recent comments. “You cannot believe in God and be anti-Semitic. You cannot love God and support or condone hate speech,” she wrote. Hailey, along with her husband Justin Bieber, is a devout Christian, and continued, “To love God is to love people. ALL people.”
Though she didn’t mention anyone by name, many are taking this missive as a response to Ye’s recent (thoroughly incorrect) conspiracy theories about Jews, and possibly also his earlier (now deleted) posts about the Biebers. In early October, Ye stirred up controversy by wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt, which drew criticism from, among others, Vogue editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson (this is before he turned the bulk of his attention on Jews; yeah, it’s been a long month). Ye retaliated with rude comments about Karefa-Johnson, who was then defended by many in the fashion industry, including Hailey Bieber. Ye then turned his attention to the model, writing on his own Instagram page, “Wait Am I canceled again??? Justin [Bieber] please let me know,” per Page Six, and then, in another post, referred to her as “nose job Hailey Baldloose.” The Biebers reportedly cut ties with the rapper soon after. (As a Jewish woman who has had a nose job: leave Hailey alone!!)
The model is not alone in calling out antisemitism recently. Sportswear brand Adidas also ended its relationship with the rapper-designer, posting a statement online reading, “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect, and fairness.”
Hailey, meanwhile, is in mending-fences mode and just hung out with her husband’s ex, Selena Gomez. Love heals; hate divides!
