Hayley Williams Talks Good Dye Young, Pre-Show Rituals, and Her Album 'This Is Why'

Glamour: What’s one beauty trend you’re obsessed with right now?

Hayley Williams: Now and forever, anything they are doing with hair in Japan. I am always slightly turned off by trends, but you can bet that whatever is happening in beauty right now in Japan will find its way to America in a couple of years. I’m always looking at Japanese hairstylists on Instagram, and they’re always doing lots of different lowlights and highlights and tips and chunks.

I knew I wanted to do orange hair for this album again, and then one tour into it, Brian had some black temporary hairspray we were playing with and I was like, no, for real I want that! So on my birthday, all I asked for was black tips, trying to look edgy. And it worked because we did a big black streak for The News video, the second video we put out for the new Paramore album. Brian just used mascara for it, but I loved how it looked. I liked the contrast, so it’s been fun having something besides just the plain orange.

What’s one beauty rule you swear by?

Beauty’s where you find it.

What’s one beauty rule you think is B.S.?

Aren’t they all?!

Fill in the blank: I love my hair when _____.

I wake up in the morning and it’s messy and soft.

Fill in the blank: I feel most beautiful when _____.

I’m playing guitar alone and sing to myself.

Do you remember the first beauty product you ever used?

Probably the Clinique 3-Step routine that came with the cute bar soap in the little mint green case. It was my mom’s and I wanted to be an adult.

What has been your biggest beauty fail?

It’s so cliché, but definitely tweezing the ever-loving shit out of my brows in the early 2000s. I’d venture to say 2003 to 2007-ish was our lowest and darkest chapter in brow history. The shapes we created…

You can only use three products for the rest of your life. What are they and why?

Oh! That’s tough but fun. Biologique Recherche VIP O2 Cleanser, Biologique Recherche P50 Lotion, and Good Dye Young’s DYEposit.

Biologique Recherche Lait VIP O2 Milk Cleanser

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50

Good Dye Young DYEposit in Copper

What’s your go-to getting ready music?

At home, it’s a podcast or an audiobook. Right now, I’m listening to Nick Cave’s Faith, Hope, and Carnage. But on the road, Brian and I are usually blaring to Whitney Houston “Heartbreak Hotel” or Toni Braxton “He Wasn’t Man Enough for Me” in the dressing room.

What is your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

A bath. I call it a reset, especially if it happens to be in the middle of the day. Lots of Epsom salts and oils.

What’s the last Instagram rabbit hole you went down?

Pedro Pascal doing anything.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions on social media, what would that be?

I would change all of it. Throw the whole bitch out and start over.
