Physical changes are part of the aging process, even if we may not be particularly excited about them. As a result of these changes, you’ll likely need to switch up your routines—and your morning beauty regimen is no exception. In fact, cosmetologists and dermatologists say there are a few key upgrades you can make after 60.

“As a dermatology nurse practitioner, I firmly believe that maintaining healthy skin requires a proactive approach that should start early on. However, as we age, our skin undergoes significant changes that call for an even more attentive and caring approach, particularly beyond the age of 60,” Akis Ntonos, FNP-C, DNP, injectable specialist, and co-founder of Aion Aesthetics, tells Best Life.

“Upgrading your morning beauty routine after 60 can be key in preserving a healthy complexion,” he says. “Each step in this process plays a vital role, and together they can help you achieve a radiant and youthful-looking appearance.”

Medical and beauty professionals have specific recommendations that can help you maintain your glow—and your confidence. Read on for six tips to revamp your morning beauty routine.

How to Upgrade Your Morning Beauty Routine After 60

1. Don’t overlook SPF.

You probably know you need to apply sunscreen when you’re planning to hit the beach or lay by the pool. But beauty professionals say that SPF is a daily necessity—no matter what’s on your agenda for the day.

“Harmful UV [ultraviolet] rays can cause skin damage, including age spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer,” Ntonos says. “Protecting your skin from the sun is critical, especially as you age. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it liberally to your face and neck.”

One way to easily integrate sun protection into your morning routine is by choosing a moisturizer with SPF.

“Applying a moisturizer with broad-spectrum SPF will give your skin double the benefit,” Laura Chacon-Garbato, licensed esthetician and director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition, says. “It will provide moisturizing properties to stay soft and supple and protect the skin from UV exposure. A broad-spectrum SPF protects you from UVA exposure, which you cannot see or feel, and UVB exposure, which can burn the skin.”

2. Introduce a serum.

Adding a serum to your morning beauty routine is another must after 60, experts say.

“Serums are concentrated formulas that can penetrate deeper into the skin than moisturizers, delivering active ingredients that target specific skin concerns,” Ntonos explains. “Look for a serum that contains antioxidants like vitamin C or niacinamide, which can help to brighten the skin and reduce hyperpigmentation.”

Chacon-Garbato notes that you can also reach for serums with vitamins B3 or E. She recommends using a serum under your daily moisturizer.

3. Go for products that enhance collagen production.

Collagen production slows down after menopause, Audrey Ford, esthetician at Selenite Beauty, explains, which is where a microcurrent device comes in. According to Medical News Today, these devices deliver “tiny currents of electricity to the face.”

“Using a microcurrent device daily will lift, firm, and stimulate new collagen growth and elastin production in the skin,” Ford tells Best Life, noting that women over 60 will specifically benefit from introducing this technique in the morning.

Xi Huang, PhD, founder of i-On Skincare, cosmetic scientist, and dermal tech developer, also recommends incorporating products with retinoids to kick collagen production into high gear and “promote skin renewal.”

4. Switch to a gentle cleanser.

Another way that beauty experts say you can upgrade your morning beauty routine is by investing in a less intense cleanser.

“Aggressive cleansers are not recommended at any age, and they are even more hazardous in your 60s because the skin gets more dryness-prone and sensitive as we get older,” says Valerie Aparovich, certified cosmetologist-aesthetician and biochemist at OnSkin.

“Products with harsh cleansing agents like SLS [sodium lauryl sulfate], SLES [sodium laureth sulfate], or containing alcohols will lead to increased dehydration, stripping the skin from its vital oils, disrupting its hydrolipid barrier, compromising its protective functions, and making the skin inflammation, irritation, and infection-prone,” Aparovich explains.

Instead, Chacon-Garbato recommends a “soft, sulfate-free cleanser in the morning.”

“This can help remove any overnight debris without stripping the skin of its natural oils,” she says. “Also, look for ingredients like aloe vera. Aloe vera is recognized for its restoring and soothing properties and is a hugely efficient hydrator that helps minimize skin dryness.”

In addition to selecting a gentle cleanser, Chacon-Garbato says that you should avoid using overly hot water, as it can irritate already fragile skin.

5. Pull back on your makeup routine.

In the morning, remember that less is more when it comes to makeup.

“Keep your makeup routine simple and natural. Heavy makeup can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, making them more apparent,” Ntonos says. “Use a lightweight foundation and cream blush for a fresh, natural look that enhances your features without emphasizing imperfections.”

And if you haven’t been using a primer underneath your makeup, you should definitely invest in one after 60.

“Primers, kind of like a paint primer except for under your foundation, work to create a smooth base for makeup application,” says Shawnda Dorantes, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, founder of Beauty Lounge Medical Spa. “However, for those who are older, it can also help to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, giving the appearance of silky smooth skin.”

Grab one that works for your skin type, Dorantes says—and don’t forget to ensure it has antioxidant properties.

6. Take a holistic approach.

Experts also say that your morning beauty routine goes beyond just upgrading your products and processes.

Staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy diet is key, but your beauty routine is further bolstered by a positive attitude.

“Read and write messages to yourself! Even love messages to yourself on the mirror saying you are beautiful,” suggests Aimee Carr, Voodoo Makeup founder, medical esthetician, celebrity beauty activist, makeup artist, and clean beauty formulation expert. “Thank your skin! Repeat, ‘I love my skin, [and] I love my mature look.'”

Carr says that it’s vital to remember to be kind to yourself in your 60s, too, as you’ve “earned every facial ‘flaw’ you see.”
