Alexa Chung put an elegant spin on sheer dressing at a party in London on Thursday evening, wearing a black lingerie-inspired slip dress by Khaite with a delicate lace bodice and barely there straps, plus one very chic accessory.

The party in question was the grand opening of Veuve Clicquot’s anniversary exhibition, Solaire Culture, and there was a boho feel to Chung’s look—aside from the fact it was black and slinky, she added a thin scarf as a final flourish. The thin, useless scarf was especially popular between 2003 and 2007, when it became a permanent fixture in celebrity paparazzi photographs thanks to brands like Marc by Marc Jacobs. Lenny Kravitz and Kate Moss have both stayed loyal to the decorative scarf, and Chung herself has a history with the black skinny scarf.

They were her accessory of choice circa 2008—she wore one to the British Fashion Awards that year. In 2014 she also wore a similar black silk scarf with a vibrant red dress to the Miu Miu show during Paris Fashion Week. Chung has been quietly endorsing this nostalgic accessory for some time; a black velvet skinny scarf was among the designs at her now closed eponymous label.
