Blake Lively can usually be counted on to kill it at the Met Gala. But she was unable to attend the 2023 event, for reasons that she made hilariously obvious on her Instagram Stories.
On May 1, while her fellow A-listers were dressed to the nines “in honor of Karl” and posing for photographs on the steps of the Met, Lively was wearing sweats and posing for mirror selfies in her bathroom. The actor, who gave birth to her fourth child in February, had a prior engagement with one of the less glamorous aspects of new motherhood—breast pumping.

“First Monday in May,” Lively wrote over the pic posted to her IG, referencing the Met Gala’s annual date. You can see in the photo that Lively is in the middle of using her breast pump, but in case the little tubes peeking out from under her purple sweater didn’t make that clear, the actor added an animation of milk flowing from her breasts to underscore the point.
Lively confirmed in April that she would not be attending the 2023 Met Gala, telling reporters, “But I will be watching.” If there’s one thing Lively should be known for, in addition to her pitch-perfect fashion sense, it’s her sense of humor. When a reporter complimented her 2022 Met Gala gown she deadpanned, “Thank you, that’s very sweet. I’ll be wearing that on my couch on Monday.”
I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Blake Lively in that stunner of a Versace gown one more time, but as wearing it reportedly required the help of three grown men, it clearly wouldn’t be the most practical choice for an evening of pumping breast milk.
