Jennifer Lawrence wants to set the record straight about her Cannes Film Festival flip-flops.

In May, Lawrence made headlines after being photographed on the Croisette wearing a simple pair of black flip-flops under her billowing crimson Christian Dior couture gown. With her expensive honey-blonde hair and statement diamond chocker necklace, the addition of the simple flat marked the ultimate high-low fashion moment.

Considering the French festival’s controversial dress code, which at one point reportedly required women to wear heels, many were instantly reminded of Kristen Stewart’s previous Cannes red-carpet protests, which included kicking off her own heels in 2018. “There’s definitely a distinct dress code.… People get very upset at you if you don’t wear heels or whatever,” Stewart told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. “If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, then you can’t ask me either.”

Cate Blanchette, Julia Roberts, and more A-list women have also gone barefoot at the event in response to gender inequality in the film industry. Jennifer Lawrence, however, was not trying to follow in any of their bare footsteps.

“I would really like to straighten this out. I was not making a political statement,” the Hunger Games star recently told Entertainment Tonight. “I had no idea until it came out that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats or walking down the red carpet barefoot, I had no clue. My shoes were a size too big.”

If there’s one thing Jennifer Lawrence looks for in a shoe, it’s that comfort factor. Not long after Cannes, the 32-year-old actor was spotted elevating another fashion faux pas in NYC, pairing her $35 Adidas slides with a set of black socks.
