Recognizable by its low waist and silky aesthetic, the slip skirt is the fashion industry’s response to the recent craze of wearing exposed lingerie, as popularized by designers like Gucci and Etro. While the satin skirt had a moment of glory in the 1990s, the updated 2023 version has established itself as an all-terrain option for the beach, the city, or anywhere else your summer plans will take you this year.

We owe this comeback above all to Kate Moss, who, in the 1990s, was already bringing the slip dress to the forefront. Wearable day or night, the skirt version soon started popping up on catwalks around the world, most notably at Tom Ford and Versace.

The slip skirt quickly became a must-have item of the decade, even making its way onto the small screen: Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) swore by the style on Friends, as did Phoebe Halliwell (Alyssa Milano) in Charmed. And because the trends of the 1990s are back in a big way in the fashion industry, the slip skirt, in the vein of the slip dress, now tops our shopping wish lists for the season.

Miu Miu, for example, always manages to make some of its pieces an object of desire, like last summer’s famous micro-skirt. For its spring-summer 2023 collection, the Italian fashion house unveiled a fluid slip skirt, while Gucci opted for a 100% transparent version adorned with floral embroidery for fall-winter 2023.

And of course, celebrities have been wearing slip skirts more and more as of late, including trendsetter Emily Ratajkowski, who was spotted on the streets of New York wearing a lingerie-style outfit consisting of a crop top and a variation of the skirt. She finished the look with a pair of leather knee-high boots. For a more casual take on the look, she also stepped out in a bright hue that went perfectly with sneakers.
