Why Is the Weeknd's Wig So Bad in The Idol

So the bad wig is…intentional? This is…a character choice? That actually makes sense to me. A wig this astonishingly bad has to be, right? According to The Idol’s hair department head Chris Fulton, the wig is all a part of the “creepiness of Tedros.”

“The Weeknd was very hands-on with the concept of Tedros’s hair,” Fulton tells Glamour. “He definitely wanted a very specific look.”

But Dracula chic wasn’t always in the cards, says Fulton. Initially Tedros was supposed to have an entirely different hair style. “Abel had such a specific idea of who this man was, and the photo references he provided were of this longer blown-out look,” he says of the first iteration of the character.

Tedros with a blowout? I wouldn’t be surprised if our favorite night club impresario had a Dyson Airwrap. But I’ll be the first to admit, Tedros practicing “Hello, angel” in the mirror just wouldn’t hit the same way without that Dracula-inspired mane.

As for how the rattail came to be, Fulton explains it was a collaboration between The Weeknd and his personal hairstylist on the show trying to push the envelope even further. “At the end, Kya Bilal created the rattail during the hair and makeup test. The rattail was definitely intentional. Everyone was thrilled,” Fulton says.

And to think, we could have been deprived of such a statement-making look! So in some ways, we might actually be grateful for the rattail. I guess.
