On the evening of Friday (November 3), the 4th annual New York Diwali Gala took place at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City.
The premiere celebration of Diwali on the East Coast, the Diwali Gala united remarkable members of the South Asian community to commemorate a profound tradition that has evolved into a cultural hallmark in New York.
Diwali, known as the ‘Festival of Lights,’ spans five days and is observed by over 1 billion people globally, each with their unique customs.
This 2023 celebration was co-chaired by Preet Bharara, Radhika Jones, and Kal Penn, with Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose in attendance, who honoured the occasion wearing a dress designed by the Indian Couturier Gaurav Gupta.
A saree gown by its very nature is designed to be fluid and free flowing, so I love how Gaurav Gupta’s signature structure was still embedded within this piece via the bodice, shoulder detail and sculpture on the hip from where the skirt falls.
I’m trying really hard to not be turned off by the hairstyle, which I should be used to by now, as it always feels very dated, from the style, to the extensions which is giving early ‘90s.
Otherwise, this was a good look for Ariana.
