With great power comes great responsibility. I’m talking to you, TikTok lip readers.
Following two separate incidents at the Golden Globes involving private celeb conversations, Selena Gomez and Emily Blunt took a vow of silence when they met up at the 2023 American Film Institute Awards in Los Angeles on January 12.
“We shall not speak lol,” Gomez joked on her Instagram Story, sharing a photo of her and Blunt posing with their perfectly manicured hands covering their mouths. The 31-year-old pop star wore a pinstripe three-piece suit by Giuseppe di Morabito, complete with a corset bustier and wide-leg trousers, while her 40-year-old counterpart also opted for chic suiting featuring a cape-like jacket with dramatic shoulder pads.
Both Selena Gomez and Emily Blunt found themselves at the center of online drama following their recent appearances at the 2024 Golden Globes on January 7. In one of the most viral moments from the ceremony, Gomez was seen sharing juicy gossip with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Teller, which online lip readers quickly decided involved a snub from Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet.

“Noooooo,” Gomez later replied to a Instagram post about the ordeal. “I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s anyone business.” Chalamet also denied rejecting Gomez.
As for Blunt, the Oppenheimer somehow sparked divorce rumors with husband John Krasinski over an inaudible red carpet conversation. This seems to be her first response to the viral moment, though a source told Us Weekly that Blunt and Krasinski “think the rumors are funny and ridiculous.”
While neither celeb seemed particularly perturbed by these lip reading videos (it’s great late night fodder, is it not?), Gomez did announce another brief social media break following the Globes. Don’t worry, she was back within 24 hours.
To me, Blunt and Gomez’s unspoken message is clear: if you want celebs to keep it messy and real at awards shows, keep your speculation and conspiracy theories in the group chat.
