Miley Cyrus Paid Homage to Tina Turner With Her Powerful Grammys Performance

Miley Cyrus is officially back—and she’s officially in a powerhouse of an era.

After taking a step back from the spotlight, Cyrus returned to the 2024 Grammys stage in perhaps the evening’s most talked-about look, a custom Margiela dress made entirely of safety pins. Then, she won her first-ever Grammy, presented to her by fellow singing icon Mariah Carey.

When it was time to perform her nominated song “Flowers,” she, unsurprisingly, brought the house down. Just ask celebs like Taylor Swift and Chrissy Teigen, who sang along in the audience (after some light scolding from Cyrus herself—because, yes, we all do know the words).

Dressed in a silver beaded fringe dress, Cyrus’s moves—and legs—called to mind the late Tina Turner. The lyrics of “Flowers”, though personal to Cyrus, also harken back to Turner’s own story of triumph after a broken relationship. Then, the connection went from symbolic to official: Cyrus went into an official tribute to the late Queen of Rock and Roll, who died in May at age 83.

In an interview that aired just before the performance, Miley Cyrus explained the Grammys performance would only be the third time she sang “Flowers” live. She also shared that she wanted to be the kind of artist that made her idols—including Turner, Cher, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Celine Dion—proud.

We’d say mission accomplished, Miley.
