At the end of the 19th century, the French presented the United States with the Statue of Liberty — a gift that would go on to become the symbol of freedom and opportunity. Since then, Paris and New York have become linked by an ever-growing cultural exchange — of artistries, ideas, and technology. Celebrating this relationship, Maria Grazia Chiuri looked to the two distinct cities and a key figure who represented the bridge between them: Marlene Dietrich. A longtime friend of Dior, the charismatic actress was known for her masculine suiting, asserting her power at a time of strict gender rules and dress codes.

Taking over the Brooklyn Museum, Dior’s Fall 2024 presentation filled the historic space with the freedom, possibility, and celebration of the meeting of cultures. From prints of the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower to tweeds, hammered satin, and crushed velvet, the line highlights ‘40s inspired light dresses with a hint of lingerie and slip dresses under large coats. Recalling the past with a contemporary lens, the collection was one for the books.

We caught up with Lizzy Hadfield ahead of the presentation to discuss the inspiration behind her look, pre-show rituals, and expectations.

Hi Lizzy! How are you doing?
Really well! So happy to be in New York. Spring is my favourite season here, and I am so excited for today.

Can you tell us about your look for the Dior Fall 2024 show?
I’m wearing a beautiful black button down dress with some biker boots. I love the classic cut of the dress with the chunkier boots. The detailing on the dress is stunning, I love the neckline and the slit created by where the buttons end.

What’s your typical pre-show routine?
Having a coffee, making sure I feel like myself with minimal hair and make up, and of course scrolling through TikTok for longer than I should.

What’s your favourite part of fashion shows/what do you get most excited about?
The atmosphere is always so infectious, I love it! They are always over so quickly so it feels like such an intense burst of energy and excitement around the collection, which always reminds me of why I love fashion so much and how much joy clothes can bring me.

Did you have any expectations going into the show?
Beautiful location, incredible clothes (I always love seeing the tailoring Dior does as it’s so classic and inspires me so much), and just an overall beautiful experience.

Is there a look that stands out to you from the runway?
There was a really beautiful sleeveless coat that I will be thinking about for a while, and the beaded top over the slightly cropped straight pants was to die for!

What makes a show memorable to you?
The collection itself! I love it especially when I see something I can recreate from my own wardrobe and makes me feel instantly inspired.
