Ahead of Monday’s event, we place our bets on who will be the best dressed, what looks we can expect to see, and more.
Who is going? What will they be wearing? Will this theme live up to expectations? We have so many questions for Monday’s big event and only a few sleeps until we get our answers. From stars to looks to glam, here are our predictions…
Literary references and the inevitable Sleeping Beauty misinterpretation
For a theme called Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, it is a given that somebody might take it a bit too literally. However, the exhibit is less about Disney princesses and more about the relationship between fashion and time — and the fragility of that symbiosis. The dress code is “The Garden of Time,” a reference to J. G. Ballard’s dark and thought-provoking short story of the same name, which touches on themes of endless consumption and destruction through the motif of a ticking time bomb-esque rose garden. We’re expecting some guests to delve into the story, and others to take the cue to look into other literary references — perhaps A Midsummer Night’s Dream or the twisted Grimms tales?
Archival heaven
Right: Woman With A Head Of Roses by Salvador Dalí, 1935
The exhibit is said to feature 250 historical garments too fragile to be worn ever again, and that statement alone has us booking flights to New York. But what will the guests wear? Houses such as Schiaparelli, Dior, and Givenchy will dominate the Costume Institute’s curation — and we’re guessing archival, perhaps less fragile (although for Kim Kardashian, who knows?) pieces from the same Houses will frequent the red carpet. We can also hope that some designers will delve into the inspiration or research behind a historical piece or two, creating new, custom looks exploring the same concepts and ideas as their archival counterparts. Elsa Schiaparelli was famously connected to Salvador Dalí’s 1935 Woman With A Head Of Roses, for example, which would make for a lovely jumping off point for a new interpretation.
Zendaya will win the game
Currently scoring the most points for her Challengers press tour looks, there is no doubt that this year’s co-chair Zendaya will take the theme on to her fullest. We’re already dreaming of how she and stylist Law Roach will put their spin on “The Garden of Time”. Will she be dressed in Loewe? Sat alongside Jonathan Anderson and co-stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist? Or usher in a new era?
Some surprising group photos
Alongside Zendaya, and Anna Wintour of course, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny are co-hosting the event — and we seriously cannot picture a photo of them all together. But if there’s ever a day for surprising celebrity meet-ups, it’s this. We’re personally hoping for another bathroom selfie.
The glam will be glamming — and multi-dimensional
The past twelve months have been experimental in the beauty industry, with trends seeming to pop up on TikTok every week. The biggest takeaway from that is that the opportunities are endless. We expect equal parts minimal, no-makeup makeup (or actually bare face looks) and avant garde statements that say more than even the clothes do. Think sculptural nails and pearl and flower embellishments in hair.
Taylor Swift? The Jenner-Kardashians? Who is skipping this year’s Met Gala?
The speculation that Taylor Swift would be attending the Met Gala for the first time since she co-hosted the event in 2016 has run wild on social media. But with her European leg of the Eras Tour starting in Paris just a few days later, we’re not too sure. What about the Kardashians? Whispers across the internet say only one or two members of the family have RSVP’d yes, but we’re betting on a few more. And… will Timothée Chalamet show up with Kylie?
