The highlight of Friday evening was the return of Celine Dion, marking her first on-stage performance since revealing her serious health condition. The Canadian superstar brought the four-hour event to a climax with a typical powerhouse performance, accompanied by a pianist on the first level of the Eiffel Tower where she sang Edith Piaf’s classic “L’Hymne à l’Amour.”
Dressed in a Dior Haute Couture embroidered white silk gown, Celine sparkled under the lights beneath the giant illuminated Olympic rings. Visually, vocally, and emotionally, it was a powerful performance.
Personally, I could only hold back the tears a third of the way into her performance. It has been such a long road to recovery for Celine, as her Stiff Person Syndrome diagnosis affected her distinctive voice. But also, the emotive depth of her performance was overwhelming. We didn’t need to know the words to understand how much this moment meant to Celine.
Her return was not just a testament to her resilience but also a deeply moving experience for the audience, and a reminder of the unifying power of music and the human spirit.
