Katy Perry has always been a chameleon in the world of pop music and fashion. From her early days of candy-coloured wigs and cartoonish costumes to the outrageous, campy ensembles that solidified her status as pop’s Queen of Camp, Katy has never been one to shy away from making a bold statement.
But as she stopped by the SiriusXM studios in Los Angeles on Monday to promote her new album, ‘143’, it was clear that Katy is entering a new chapter—both musically and sartorially.
Dressed in a Fall 2024 look from KNWLS, Katy sported a Grace bustier top, SLK leather shorts, and a matching jacket, all paired with The Attico Ester Mule sandals.
At first glance, the ensemble might have led you to believe that ‘143’ is a rock or indie-inspired album. The leather, the structure, the attitude—it’s a far cry from the bubblegum aesthetics that once defined her. However, looks can be deceiving. Despite the edginess of her outfit, ‘143’ is said to be a “bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album,” a far cry from the rock star vibes her outfit exuded.
This contrast between her outfit and the sound of her new album is intriguing. It hints at a Katy Perry who is evolving, exploring new dimensions of her identity while staying true to the high-energy, feel-good music that has always been her hallmark. It’s as if she’s telling us that while her music may be familiar in its celebration of joy and self-expression, her style is ready to venture into new territory.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen Katy gradually move away from the thematic, larger-than-life looks that once dominated her wardrobe. Gone are the days of whimsical, almost cartoonish ensembles that made her a fashion icon in the world of camp. Instead, we’re seeing a more refined, edgy, and sophisticated side of Katy Perry. This transformation doesn’t feel like a departure from who she is, but rather, an evolution—a natural progression as she continues to grow both as an artist and as a person.
That said, I can’t help but hope that this new era doesn’t mean the end of Katy’s playful approach to fashion. While the KNWLS outfit is a departure from her past looks, it still carries a sense of fun and daring—a reminder that even as she evolves, Katy Perry is still, at her core, an artist who loves to play with fashion.
