Naomi Ackie joined Zoe Kravitz at the London photocall for ‘Blink Twice’ at IET London on Sunday, donning a look from the Proenza Schouler Fall 2024 collection.
Proenza Schouler’s designs often push the envelope, and this look was no exception. The outfit was a complex medley of asymmetric details, layered fabrics, frayed edges, and a juxtaposition of sheer and wool materials. It was a bold statement, undeniably fashion-forward, but also a risky one. While some might appreciate the avant-garde nature of the ensemble, it’s hard to ignore that the execution didn’t quite hit the mark.
The biggest issue wasn’t necessarily the design itself but the way it was styled. The grooming ultimately let Naomi down. A looser fit would have allowed the outfit to drape more effortlessly, embracing the fluidity that Proenza Schouler’s designs often require to truly shine. Instead, the look felt somewhat stiff and constrained, losing the relaxed elegance that could have elevated it from bold to brilliant.
There’s no denying that the idea behind the outfit was a great one. The mix of textures and the play on proportions had the potential to be visually stunning, especially on someone as poised as Naomi. The look just needed more breathing room, both in terms of tailoring and the overall vibe. A slightly looser silhouette could have transformed this outfit into a standout moment.
With a few adjustments, this could have been a fashion win; instead, it serves as a lesson in the importance of grooming when it comes to pulling off daring designs.
