Chappell Roan brought a surprising medieval flair to the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she claimed the Moonman for Best New Artist.
While most artists opt for vintage or modern glam at the event, Chappell took a different route, channelling a Joan of Arc-inspired aesthetic with three looks.
Her first look, from the Y/Project Fall 2024 collection, had all the makings of a medieval warrior. The tulle burgundy and white gown gave her an ethereal, almost ghostly presence, but it was the accessories that truly set this outfit apart. A sword, an armoured manicure, medieval cuffs over a mesh fingerless gloves, and a crucifix completed the look, adding an air of battle-ready strength that was both unexpected and fascinating. Joan of Arc would have been proud.
The look was further elevated with a regal green velvet robe that amplified the medieval vibe and gave Chappell an almost queenly presence on the red carpet. It wasn’t just a fashion statement—it was a full-on character transformation. We weren’t expecting a medieval warrior at the VMAs, but Chappell delivered one in style.
As if her red carpet appearance wasn’t enough, the medieval theme intensified tenfold during her performance of “Good Luck Babe,” where she donned full armour.
And when she took the stage to accept her award, she did so in a Rabanne Spring 2024 dress covered in shimmering paillettes, maintaining the metallic, armoured theme of the night. The commitment to this look—on the carpet, during her performance, and onstage—showed a level of dedication I can truly get behind.
No one had a medieval theme in mind for the VMAs, but Chappell Roan made it work. Her trio of thematic looks were bold, theatrical, and refreshing, proving that she’s not afraid to take risks and stand out in an arena known for its eclectic fashion choices.
