When Selena Gomez stepped onto the red carpet at the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for ‘Only Murders in the Building’, a sense of déjà vu was hard to shake.
Was it because Selena gravitates toward halter necklines, as we’ve seen at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of ‘Emilia Perez’, the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ LA premiere, the inaugural Rare Impact Fund Benefit, or even the 2022 Critics’ Choice Awards?
Perhaps, but I think it’s more likely that her custom Ralph Lauren Collection made-to-measure black silk velvet halter gown triggered a memory of her Valentino gown at the 2023 Academy Museum Gala.
The pavé neckline of this Ralph Lauren Collection gown instantly recalls that look, but while I wasn’t a fan of the Valentino—finding its neckline overwhelming—this latest gown was a far better execution for Selena.
The difference lies in the details. Where the Valentino neckline felt like it was swallowing her, this Ralph Lauren gown took a more understated approach. The design was elegant, refined, and perfectly in harmony with Selena’s presence. The halter cut, something she’s clearly fond of, felt more streamlined and balanced in this case, enhancing rather than distracting from the overall look. Less was truly more.
The styling elevated the gown even further with Tiffany & Co. earrings in platinum with diamonds, a sleek Lock bangle, and a mix of Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany rings alongside three Victoria® rings and a bracelet.
