Lupita Nyong’o stepped out for the Headline Gala of the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, promoting her latest film, ‘The Wild Robot’.
To say that we have been worried about what would become of Luptia’s style as a Chanel ambassador would be the understatement of the century, and this latest outing will only add fuel to the fire for those questioning her new style direction.
When Nyong’o attended the Opening Season Ballet Gala draped in a black cape, many were left wondering if her signature style had been compromised. Now, her choice of a Chanel Fall 2021 Haute Couture tweed suit raises the same question. But let’s not be hasty in judgment—the suit itself is not the problem. The tailoring of the suit evokes a sense of timeless elegance.
The real issue here is the scarf. Its heavy embellishment and exaggerated size scream “Christmas has come too early,” overwhelming an otherwise sophisticated look. As winter approaches, cozy layers are expected, but this scarf dominates the outfit, drawing attention away from the sleek suit underneath. Its sheer size and festive appearance detract from the overall ensemble, leaving it feeling more like a holiday statement than a film festival gala look.
However, all is not lost. Lupita’s 2017 Chanel black plexiglass and strass Robot minaudière brought a touch of whimsy, reminding us of her unique charm. Even the footwear, an area where Lupita has sometimes faltered, was perfectly chosen on this occasion.
Had she ditched the oversized scarf, this would have been a winning look. Instead, it’s proof that even a good look can be overshadowed by a single over-the-top accessory.
