Ahead of the BFI London Film Festival’s opening next week, the BFI Luminous Gala took center stage at The Roundhouse on Tuesday, with Tilda Swinton gracing the event. Let’s be honest—Tilda’s recent fashion choices have been underwhelming. Her Alaïa look at the Venice Film Festival was a high point, and her Chanel ensemble at the San Sebastián Festival was forgettable, to say the least.
However, this latest appearance at the Luminous Gala was surprisingly refreshing. Tilda opted for a look from Chanel’s Fall 2023 Haute Couture collection, and while it didn’t deliver the avant-garde, otherworldly magic that we hope to see from her, it worked in a different, subtler way. Considering the dreary London weather, I found myself drawn to its seasonal appropriateness. The textured floral top, with an embellished neckline that eliminated any need for a necklace, paired perfectly with the heavy woven stripe skirt. It was refined, grounded, and suited the mood.
Sure, it may not have been an iconic Tilda moment that leaves us breathless with its creativity, but given her recent streak, this was a win. In a month marked by uninspired looks, this Chanel outfit felt like a step in the right direction. It’s understated yet seasonally fitting—a quiet triumph that we needed from Tilda. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of a stronger style resurgence for her.
