Last night, while the art world descended on South Beach, I sacrificed two hours in traffic to meet the ultimate Miu Miu muse, Miss Gigi Hadid, at the brand’s design district store. Inside, the model sat perched at a desk in a corporate cool girl fit while fashion fans pressed their faces up against the windows. The occasion? The launch of Miu Miu Select, a collection of the it girl turned curator’s favorite ready-to-wear pieces from the new season, including crisp blue poplin shirts and reflective wrap around glasses. The looks were more Manhattan than Miami, but when I spoke to Gigi we both agreed—excess is the best when you commit to the bit, sparkles, big shades, and all.

THURSDAY 7:29 PM DECEMBER 5, 2024 MIAMI
SPEAKER 2: Gigi, this is Taylore.
GIGI HADID: Hi, I’m Gigi. You look amazing.
TAYLORE SCARABELLI: Thank you! What are you doing over here? You look busy.
HADID: I’m signing these tags, and the first people buy from my Select will get this sewn into their piece. So it’s part of the fun.
SCARABELLI: Fabulous. You’re working hard, giving corporate Miu Miu girlboss.
HADID: Right. I feel very at my Miu Miu desk right now. [Laughs]
SCARABELLI: I have to ask you, do you identify with the messy Miu Miu girl aesthetic?
HADID: Yes. Someone just told me that my tights ran in the back, and I told them that it’s part of the vibe.
SCARABELLI: That’s hot.
HADID: I think that what my Select shows is that I wake up on different days feeling like such a different girl. Sometimes I’m much more tomboy, or I’m on the farm and it’s a very mom-centric day—I’m much more rugged in that part of my life. And then some days, I wake up feeling more girly, but my girly side always has something a little bit more edgy and funky to it.
SCARABELLI: Yeah.
HADID: I don’t think I’m ever full girly—actually, that’s not true. I can go full glam glow girly, but most of the time, there’s something funky.
SCARABELLI: I feel that. What do you think about Miami style? Have you been people watching since you got here?
HADID: Yes. I just generally love anyone that is expressing themselves. I don’t think that there’s styles or trends that I don’t like. If someone’s pulling it off and it’s true to them, I love it. What irks me more is when you can tell someone’s sticking to a trend so hard that they’re uncomfortable in what they’re wearing.
SCARABELLI: One hundred percent. Well, I’m in love with the Miami excess. It’s fun.
HADID: Yeah, if it’s excess and it makes sense for them, then I’m obsessed. I love something a little campy.
SCARABELLI: Same. So it’s art week. Are you trying to buy any work while you’re here?
HADID: I’m more of a smaller artist type of buyer. My friend Austyn is amazing, she’s the only artist I’ve ever bought from at Art Basel. She’s showing this week. So check her out, Austyn Weiner.
SCARABELLI: Cool. And what are you are going to do after this?
HADID: I’m going to dinner at a Greek restaurant I love.
SCARABELLI: Fab. Enjoy. Thank you, Gigi.
HADID: Thank you for coming. I appreciate it. Good to see you.
