Ethan Hawke is no stranger to a classic suit, but every now and then, he steps outside the “standard tux” box. At the Berlin Film Festival, where he was promoting his new film Blue Moon, he took things to an entirely new level, serving up two looks that felt more like method dressing than mere fashion choices.

Ethan made the Bottega Veneta macro gingham shirt the focal point of his outfit, pairing it with slightly oversized trousers and Bottega Veneta Roma slippers. The relaxed proportions gave off an air of effortless cool—like an artist in his element, unbothered by convention.

Premiere
But it was at the premiere where I had my lightbulb moment—so this is where Maya Hawke gets her style personality from. Ethan stepped out in a checked Bottega Veneta suit, boldly paired with a leopard-print tie.
At first, I thought, “This is an unusual choice, even for Ethan,” but then I had to dig a little deeper. The oversized fit, the bold checks, the unexpected print clash—it all had to mean something. And sure enough, it did.
In Blue Moon, Ethan plays Lorenz Hart, a lyricist from the 1930s and early 1940s. While Hart himself wasn’t known for wearing a zoot suit, this style was emblematic of that era, particularly within urban communities where the exaggerated proportions were a statement of both fashion and resistance. Suddenly, Ethan’s look made perfect sense. This was intentional.
Ethan works with celebrity stylist Michael Fisher—who also dresses Sebastian Stan, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Bowen Yang, and Jharrel Jerome—all of whom are known for their razor-sharp tailoring. So when Ethan shows up in a suit that looks a little too big, a little too nonchalant, you know it’s not an oversight. It’s a choice.
And that’s what I find so charming about this. Life is imitating art. This is Ethan method dressing, but in a way that still feels natural to him. His character in Blue Moon may feel a little out of place at times, but there’s a charm and confidence in his choices—just like this suit. It might not be conventionally perfect, but that’s exactly what makes it work in this case.
