As part of our annual By Women series—which spotlights the best women-owned products and companies—we’re committed to giving female founders who own 51% or more of their business a platform. This not only allows them to introduce their brilliant products to a wide and potentially new audience, but it also helps you—the reader—discover really cool stuff. Like Nestig, a line of aesthetically-pleasing furniture and bedding for babies and kids, founded by mom-of-one Sara Adam Slywka.

Sara Adam Slywka had always been interested in baby and child products, but when she went to business school she realized that there was a real opportunity to make the nursery design experience more enjoyable for parents.

“When you design a nursery, it’s this fun creative exercise where you are making a space for memories and joy,” she tells Glamour. “Nestig was meant to reflect that same feeling back to parents as they go through this exciting process.”

In business school, she also met her co-founder and they worked together to launch Nestig in 2020. The brand is only five years old but is already a top destination for parents looking for an aesthetically pleasing yet practical nursery, with its viral Wave Crib becoming one of the hottest products on Instagram. Slywka chatted with Glamour about how to find that elusive balance and how to grow a company from birth.

Glamour: How do you balance motherhood and entrepreneurship?

Sara Adam Slywka: I am a big believer in the law of diminishing marginal returns. In theory, I could spend every waking hour working on Nestig but after a point, each additional hour is less impactful than the last. Taking time away to focus on other parts of my life helps me come back to work ready to face the day’s challenges. I feel similarly about parenting, focusing on work is a great outlet that helps me recharge to return to my daily parenting work.
