Forget “coastal grandmother.” I’m here for “fancy mermaid.”
Yes, fancy mermaid is—to use TikTok parlance—an “aesthetic” I just made up, but it was also the first thing that crossed my mind upon seeing Katie Holmes at the premiere of her new film, Alone Together, at the Tribeca Festival on Tuesday, June 14. The actor-writer-director stepped out in a slinky white crochet Chloé dress (or it might be a two-piece?), which she layered over a lacy bralette. Something about the see-through, almost fishnet weave, as well as the body-hugging silhouette, gives Holmes the appearance of a sustainably minded mermaid who made couture out of discarded fisherman’s netting and rolled up to a red carpet. To be clear, this is absolutely a compliment.
Leaning into the beach-ready aesthetic, Holmes wore her hair down and styled in her natural wavy texture, and kept her makeup soft and sun-kissed.
To make the whole ensemble appear less Montauk and more Manhattan, Holmes styled the tank dress with a chunky gold chain necklace, a leather clutch, and square-toe heels.
