The British house’s holiday capsule pairs its heritage outerwear with gowns and shirts embellished in yards of gleaming crystals
Words by ELIZABETH VARNELL
As the holidays approach, Burberry is introducing a capsule filled with pieces designed for the bustling season’s full range of traditions and events. Every occasion is covered. There are duffle coats to ward off the winter elements, glamorous gowns and suits for formal dinners, and a trove of accessories, from quilted Lola bags to engraved palladium-plated signet rings and all manner of cashmere scarves for under-the-tree surprises.
To document the celebratory offerings, filmmakers Torso shot Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy with a pair of inky angel’s wings pulling a sack of gifts all wrapped in the house’s Exaggerated Check print. In the blink of an eye, he’s seen fronting a string ensemble in a black wool suit emblazoned with an Equestrian Knight, before twirling an umbrella in a padded leather parka and overnight bag, all while snow gently falls. Next up in the house’s The Night Before collection video (paired with Ville Haimala percussive soundtrack), Shakira vamps in a crystal-encrusted tulle gown underneath a chandelier before donning ready-to-wear designs atop an endless set of dining tables that morph into a catwalk where napkins become mini Bowling bags and a trench coat in the brand’s distinctive house check magically materializes to wrap around her shoulders. The Columbian singer completes her final look with over-the-knee boots and oversize bow-shaped earrings fashioned out of grosgrain ribbon and resin pearls encased in gold-plated florals, all designed by the line’s former chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci.
The performers’ festive designs round out an extensive capsule headlined by brown birch check patterns splashed across car coats, teddy bears and totes, joining belt bags, crystal-embellished rings, cufflinks and classic cashmere scarves still made in Scotland at a 200-year-old mill. One thing is certain, it’s a lineup sure to brighten the season well beyond the Twelfth Night.
