Anyone else crochet a useless colorful potholder for their parents, or was that just me? Anyway, it’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw Kim Kardashian rocking what can only be described as Basket Hair on Instagram.
The star, whose hairstylist Chris Appleton has never given her a moment of peace in her life, posted pictures of herself, um, squatting? In her…garage? Kim’s house is so big and empty it’s impossible to tell, but wherever she is, she’s wearing flesh-colored leggings, a mesh top, and has her platinum hair in some kind of criss-cross configuration that ends in…braids?
The comments are pretty ruthless, with many comparing the overall effect to the Revolutionary-era powdered wigs of yore. “she getting ready to write the declaration of independence,” reads the top comment. Another compared it to the latticework on top of pie. One person asked, “why is she not allowed to play around in her creativity? Y’all love trying to box people in. That y’all don’t even know.”

Few, however, are making the most obvious comparison, which is to Daenerys Targaryen’s increasingly elaborate hair braids in the final seasons of Game of Thrones. Maybe Kim Kardashian is entering her Khaleesi era, although, if you’ve seen the show all the way through, you know that might not be a great thing…
Over on his own Instagram, Appleton posted the same pictures captioned with the chain link emoji: “🔗🔗🔗.” It doesn’t make it make more sense, but it also doesn’t make it make less sense.
Unexpected hair braids seem to be the look du jour, as Selma Blair just attended the Fall/Winter 2024-2025 Schiaparelli Haute Couture Show in Paris wearing a necktie that’s actually a blonde braid.
