Zhang Ziyi Wore Chanel Haute Couture To The 'Babygirl' Venice Film Festival Premiere

Zhang Ziyi, renowned for her impeccable style, graced the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival on Friday evening for the premiere of ‘Babygirl.’

As a member of the festival jury, expectations were high for the Chinese actress, who has consistently delivered some of the most memorable fashion moments on the international stage. While her opening look at the festival firmly sits in my top 10, her choice for this premiere—a Chanel Spring 2024 Haute Couture tunic dress embroidered with flowers, pearls, and feathers paired with a white silk tulle skirt—left much to be desired.

While I’m relieved, she didn’t opt for the white tights seen on the runway (a choice many of you feel that Kristen Stewart and Lucy Boynton could barely pull off), this ensemble still missed the mark.

The tunic dress’ pink, white, and peach tones, while delicate, did little to complement Zhang Ziyi’s natural beauty. Instead, they seemed to wash her out.

Moreover, the styling choices left me puzzled. The silver Chanel clutch and black Chanel pumps felt mismatched with both each other and the dress. There was a major disconnect that detracted from what could have been a cohesive look. The contrast between the silver accessories and the soft pastel dress was too stark, and the black pumps felt like an afterthought.

It’s important to note that this critique is not a dismissal of the craftsmanship. The meticulous embroidery of flowers, pearls, and feathers is a testament to Chanel’s attention to detail and artistry. However, even the most beautifully crafted piece needs to suit the wearer, and in this case, the dress didn’t feel like the right fit for Zhang Ziyi’s usual style.
