The ‘Babygirl’ Venice Film Festival premiere was a showcase for Armani, as Armani Beauty sponsor the festival, with several celebrities stepping out in beautiful creations by the iconic designer.
However, not all the looks hit the mark. Here’s a breakdown of who wore what—and how they fared on the red carpet.
A Mature Choice for a Young Star
As the face of Armani Beauty US, Camila Mendes wore a beautiful Armani Privé Spring 2024 light green dress accented with lace. While she undeniably radiated elegance, my first thought was that the gown felt a bit too mature for her. This dress would have been a perfect choice for someone like Allison Janney or Judith Light, whose style sensibilities align more with the gown’s vibe. Nevertheless, Camila carried herself with grace, proving that even in a more mature look, she can hold her own.
Bringing Back the Brown Suit
Chase Stokes, another face of Armani Beauty US, made a bold choice with a sleek chocolate brown Giorgio Armani suit. In doing so, he brought the brown suit trend back into the spotlight from awards season. This was a fresh departure from the usual black and navy suits we often see, and it paid off. Chase looked polished and modern, proving that brown is anything but boring.
A Missed Opportunity
Despite the heavily jewelled neckline and draping fringe details, Ella Purnell’s Armani Privé Spring 2007 gown didn’t quite land. I found myself wishing to see this look on someone like Catherine Zeta-Jones, who could have brought more presence to it. Ella is stunning, but this gown didn’t do her justice. The dress’ length was also strangely bothersome.
Lacking the Wow Factor
Isabela Merced, also representing Armani Beauty US, wore a stunning Armani Privé Fall 2007 strapless plunging gown. However, the dress seemed to be missing a touch of the dramatic flair that someone like Dita Von Teese or Scarlett Johansson would have brought. Isabela is undoubtedly beautiful, but the gown needed a bit more personality to shine.
A Safe Bet in Black
Kaya Scodelario wore a classic Giorgio Armani black dress. Some might say this was a less adventurous choice, but it was also a foolproof one. Kaya looked effortlessly chic, demonstrating that sometimes, sticking to the basics is the best strategy.
The Star of the Night
Lili Reinhart, yet another face of Armani Beauty US, was perhaps the best-dressed of this group in a midnight blue Armani Privé velvet gown. From the silhouette to the delicate embellishments, everything about this look was perfect. Lili stood out, combining elegance with a touch of modern sophistication.
Brand New Armani Privé
Venice Film Festival shall cannot pass without a sighting of Madisin Rian, the face of Armani Beauty, wearing a stunning Armani Privé gown, and this Spring 2024 masterpiece is no exception. My only surprise here is that she didn’t select a look from the archives.
A Standout in Emporio Armani
Ncuti Gatwa’s Emporio Armani suit was a breath of fresh air amidst the sea of typical tuxedos. His choice to break away from the norm paid off, making him stand out from the other men at the festival. His new blonde hair also added a fun, distinctive touch to his overall look.
Reflecting on these looks, it’s clear that some of the young ladies struggled to sell these Armani gowns to me. By wishing to see these dresses on older, more seasoned stars, it suggests that these “grown folks” gowns might have been better suited to a different crowd. While the craftsmanship of each piece was undeniable, sometimes it’s not just about the dress but about who is wearing it.
