Following their appearance at Venice Film Festival, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton attended the premiere of ‘The Room Next Door’ held during the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Saturday.

A Cannes Vibe in Toronto

Julianne Moore has always had an impeccable knack for pulling off high fashion looks, particularly during major film festivals. When she stepped onto the red carpet at the premiere of ‘The Room Next Door’ in a Bottega Veneta Resort 2025 gingham silk dress, my initial reaction was one of surprise. This wasn’t because the dress didn’t suit her — on the contrary, it was a beautiful choice — but because it felt like a dress I’d associate with her Cannes Film Festival wardrobe.

I’ve often viewed her Cannes style as being more ethereal, playful, and occasionally experimental, whereas outside Europe, her looks tend to exude more gravitas and sophistication. Perhaps I’ve mistakenly attributed her Cannes looks to a broader “Film Festival style.”

Some of you might be in two minds about this dress due to her complexion and the off-white hue. Normally, pale tones can wash out someone with her skin tone, but the red floral appliques balanced that out, providing just the right pop of colour, adding texture and vibrancy that allowed the dress to stand out, while her Ana Khouri earrings were the perfect finishing touch.

A Contrast Androgynous Aesthetic

Tilda Swinton, on the other hand, has taken a completely different approach. While Julianne’s wardrobe has leaned heavily into feminine silhouettes, Tilda’s style has been markedly androgynous for this press tour for ‘The Room Next Door’ which I’m wondering if it is intentional.

Since Tilda’s return to the spotlight, her only standout moment for me was her Alaïa dress for the Venice Film Festival premiere of ‘Queer.’ I’m generally not a fan of white with ivory tones together, and in this case, nothing changes my mind, especially when styled with black shoes.

Considering the role she is playing, I feel that Tilda isn’t making this tour all about the clothes, and this quiet approach will continue.
