Tilda Swinton Wore Chanel Haute Couture To 'The Room Next Door' San Sebastian Film Festival Premiere

Tilda Swinton made an appearance at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Thursday for the premiere of ‘The Room Next Door’ following the photocall, and as always, her bold style took center stage.

Known for her avant-garde, androgynous fashion, Tilda often pulls off what few others can, making her a reliable muse for daring red carpet choices.

Unfortunately, even Tilda’s considerable presence couldn’t rescue this Chanel Fall 2024 Haute Couture look from itself.

Chanel has recently shifted to reworking previous designs from Virginie Viard’s collections, and I’ve been enjoying the evolution—until this outfit came along. Tilda’s ensemble featured a black organza blouse adorned with pleated ruffles and embroidered braids, paired with a long black leather satin skirt with box pleats. It’s a lot, and not in a good way. There’s an overwhelming sense that the look is trying too hard to be everything at once, drowning in textures and elements that clash rather than complement.

The blouse alone—with its dramatic ruffles and intricate embroidery—could have been a statement piece, but paired with the leather satin skirt, the outfit feels chaotic. There’s no focal point, leaving even Tilda unable to anchor the look into something cohesive. It’s like Chanel couldn’t decide which element should take center stage, so they just threw everything together, hoping Tilda’s charisma could make it work. Credit is due to Chanel for having faith in her ability to carry such a complex design, but this time it was a miss.

Chanel shoes, a Tweed Byzance ring, and Chanel High Jewelry were perfectly lovely additions, but they did little to elevate the overly busy outfit.

Even the great Tilda Swinton has her limits, and this particular look pushed them way too far.
