Just when I thought we’d all run out of ideas for how to make winter outerwear capital “F” Fashion, Katie Holmes cinches the waist of her cropped peacoat with a metallic gold belt. Her mind!
The actor (who is still starring in Our Town on Broadway, by the way), was photographed on another one of her New York City style walks, playing with hemlines and shapes with her outfit. She wore a pair of cropped, wide-leg jeans with black ankle boots, a slouchy black beanie, and ombré sunnies. Interestingly, she traded her favorite Le Cambon 35 model by Manu Atelier bag, the one she’s worn basically every time we’ve seen her in public for weeks, for a plain black shopper stuffed with a purple shopping bag.
But today’s fashion-y touch comes courtesy of Holmes’s short black peacoat, worn with the collar popped and further accessorized by the gold belt, which features a short chain detail—like the chain of a quilted Chanel bag—in the front.
The belt-over-the-coat move is exactly the kind of unexpected detail that we’ve, ironically, come to expect from Katie Holmes—especially when it comes to adapting her wardrobe for colder weather. On December 14, for instance, she proved that ballet flats can be worn year-round, pairing her bow-adorned ballerinas with black tights under her jeans. In November, she dressed down a glam silk slip skirt with a denim jacket and contrasting gold velvet flats.
Holmes remains living proof that comfort and chic are not mutually exclusive, and for that we are all eternally grateful (especially in the winter).
