Yuzuru Hanyu joins Gucci as new brand ambassador

Japanese figure skating legend Yuzuru Hanyu is furthering his presence in fashion. Yuzuru Hanyu just joined luxury brand, Gucci as its latest brand ambassador.

The athlete stepped away from competitive figure skating in 2022 but remains a household name in the sport. However, this is not his first venture in the fashion world. In 2023, his fashion portraiture was part of the opening exhibition of the Gucci Ginza Gallery, showcasing his dynamic beauty and inner strength. He’s also known for his elaborate and elegant costumes during his figure skating competitions.

Gucci taps Yuzuru Hanyu as its latest brand ambassador

“I am truly delighted to become part of the Gucci community, which nurtures bonds with creators around the world beyond the realm of fashion,” Hanyu said of his new role. “Throughout its long history, Gucci has devoted passion to craftsmanship and demonstrated exceptional creativity and is fascinating many fans in Japan as well,” he added.

The 29-year-old skater also said that he is eager to “continue discovering the allure of Gucci in the times ahead.” In return, Gucci gave its warmest congratulations to Hanyu and teased their future collaborations.

One of the greatest figure skaters in history

At four years old, Hanyu began skating. And the rest, as they say, is history. He etched his name in history books by becoming the men’s singles figure skating gold medalist at two consecutive Olympics: Sochi in 2014 and Pyeongchang in 2018. And in 2020, he completed a grand slam of major international competitions. He also became the youngest recipient of the People’s Honor Award, bestowed by the Prime Minister of Japan.

Even more impressive is the fact that Hanyu has broken world records not once or twice but 19 times. This is the highest among single skaters since the introduction of the International Skating Union’s judging system in 2004. He set the standard by being the first to receive over 100 points in the men’s short program, over 200 points in the men’s free skate, and over 300 total points. Additionally, he won his first Olympic title when he was 19 years old, the youngest male skater since Dick Button in 1948.

Hanyu’s competitive skating career is certainly impressive. Now, it’ll be interesting to see what he does next when it comes to fashion.
