Last time we saw Gigi Hadid on the Met Gala red carpet, she was a column of ivory Prada, statuesque in a corset and Jessica Rabbit-ish hair.

This year, with expectations higher than ever, she subverted expectations. While the vast majority of attendees interpreted the “Gilded Age” theme literally with diamonds and gold, Gigi Hadid’s Met Gala 2022 fit trended more liquid latex than 20th century ruling class.

Dressed by Versace, Hadid wore head-to-toe shiny scarlet—pointy-toe stiletto boots and skintight pants leading up to a structured bodice of the same material, her waist sucked into a somehow even tighter corset. But the outfit was made by a billowing, sumptuous coat, though the word coat does not do justice to this particular garment. Hadid’s look will surely polarize fans, but the fact is that a billion puffy jacket owners around the world are shivering with envy right now.

Her sister Bella Hadid, 25, wore an almost complimentary look—a leathery black corset with articulated cups and metal accents. Though their outfits seem like siblings, Bella’s is Burberry while Gigi’s is Versace.

Hadid, who celebrated her 27th birthday last week, has become a consistent fixture at the Met Gala—she started attending in 2015, wearing a cherry tomato-shade DVF gown with a high slit and plunging neckline. Her looks each year have gotten progressively more daring. The following year, she wore a Tommy Hilfiger look with a sheer skirt and a sequined breastplate that connected around her neck. By 2019, for the “camp”-themed gala, she was committed to the costume-yness of it all, in a full headpiece, magnificent eyelashes, and a glittering, androgynous Michael Kors bodysuit and cape.
