Emma Corrin, the actor most famous for playing Princess Diana on Netflix’s The Crown, only recently came out as non-binary—just in time to grace the August cover of American Vogue. They were photographed in a Louis Vuitton tank dress, Cartier chain necklace, and, to keep things funky, a Yankees baseball cap over their short, tousled blonde hair.
Says Corrin in the profile, “I feel much more seen when I’m referred to as ‘they,’ but my closest friends, they will call me ‘she,’ and I don’t mind, because I know they know me.” The actor also explains in the article, “In my mind, gender just isn’t something that feels fixed.” They say, “and I don’t know if it ever will be; there might always be some fluidity there for me.”
While Emma Corrin is the first non-binary person to grace the cover of Vogue, they are not the first highly visible celebrity to come out as non-binary recently. Demi Lovato and Halsey have both updated their pronouns to she/they, saying they also feel fluid about their gender. Elliot Page is another A-lister who made headlines when he publicly came out as trans for the first time, and reintroduced himself using he/him pronouns.
It’s not an easy time to be trans or non-binary in America, so I’m happy to celebrate these folks whenever and as loudly as possible.
