Katie Holmes wore her favorite Miu Miu ballet flats to the opening night of the American Ballet Theatres new production...

There’s no doubt that ballet flats are having a moment right now, with one pair proving to be a cult favorite: the Miu Miu flat pumps, which Katie Holmes can’t get enough of.  First launched on the spring-summer 2016 runway, the buckled flats, featuring ribbon detailing, have enjoyed a revival over the past year, with everyone from Vogue editors to the A-list set among its fans.

It’s no surprise, then, that the style icon—taking a leaf out of the Princess of Wales’s playbook—put on her Miu Miu ballet flats for the opening night of the American Ballet Theatre’s new production, Like Water for Chocolate, in New York on Thursday night. The actor teamed the pumps with another of her summer-style essentials: a deconstructed knit dress from Chloé’s autumn-winter 2023 collection.

While you might have expected Holmes to pair the maxidress with heels (perhaps the tiny kitten heels she was spotted in at the Cannes Film Festival last month), it seems that she subscribes to her former stylist Allison Bornstein’s “wrong shoe theory”—adding an unexpected shoe to give a look more personality.

Earlier this month the style muse paired her Miu Miu ballet flats with a blazer and maxidress, when again a pair of heels might have been the natural choice. It’s clear that in Katie Holmes’s wardrobe, there’s no such thing as a wrong shoe.
